Summer Time Travels with the Speake Marin Dual Time
The average dual timer has a 24-hour index, a day/night indicator, and usually a date window, but can it also deliver a travel experience? Speake Marin’s Openworked Dual Time takes the concept beyond the typical dual time functions, combining them with a design that transports the wearer to the beaches of Miami, the sands of the Atacama Desert in Chile, or the picturesque terracotta-paved vistas from the hilltop villages of the Luberon in France. It practically serves you a frozen daiquiri.
Capturing An Exotic Moment In Time
The Openworked Dual Time was launched in 2019 in a limited edition of 30 titanium pieces in 38mm or 42mm sizes, and was quickly followed up with a red gold version that added a sleek elegance to the design. In 2022, Speake Marin really started to have some fun with the collection, adding the colorful, exotic-location-inspired series. The Dual Time Lime is the tropical beach destination version, a jaunty interpretation of time well spent in another time zone, conjuring images of cocktails on faraway beaches. The lime color was applied to the plates, index rings and seconds subdial to create a vibrant summer mood, contrasting perfectly with the black bridges, seconds dial and DLC-treated titanium case. It added a fresh sense of modernity and readability to the dial layout.
A year later came the Dual Time Pink, likewise inspired by an exotic destination, this time the pastel tones of the Art Deco architecture of the Ocean Drive district of Miami. It conjures images of flamingos and Don Johnson’s wardrobe in “Miami Vice,” capturing a moment in time on the beaches of Miami, relaxing among the palm trees and surf. It is available in 38 mm (10 pieces) and 42 mm (28 pieces).
A Work Of High Watchmaking; A Modern Design
Launched last year, the Dual Time Terracotta captures the glow of summer, infusing the timepiece with effortless, chic style. It reflects the towering rock formations of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the arid plateaus of the Atacama Desert in Chile, or the picturesque terracotta-paved vistas from the hilltop villages of the Luberon in France. The Terracotta Dual Time is made in 38mm and 42mm sizes in a titanium case.
Speake Marin first introduced the Openworked model in 2016, and it was already regarded as a work of high watchmaking by the time the Dual Time version was launched in 2019. Since initiating its in-house movement strategy in 2015, Speake Marin has developed several movements, including 3 Hz movements for its minute repeater and double tourbillon watches, followed by the three-hand 4Hz movements, which were featured in the Openworked designs with caliber SMA01.
A Dual Timer With A Difference
The SMA02, in the Openworked Dual Time series, drives a second time zone, day/night indicator and date. The collection’s signature positioning of the small seconds indicator between 1 and 2 on the dial – not an easy feat in watchmaking – was an ideal spot for the seamless addition of a retrograde date. Local time is clocked by the central hours/minutes/seconds hands. Home time and day/night indicator are indexed on a ring around the opening at 9 o’clock. Together with the Eric Giroud-designed Piccadilly case, this unique combination and arrangement of features distinguishes Speake Marin’s dual timer from others, which tend to look very similar.
The Dual Time collection is a work of high watchmaking with a modern aesthetic, and the introduction of these new colors elevated the design further, giving it a clear identity and intention. It is a testament to the transformative power of color. As a timepiece inspired by travel, it represents the excitement, adventure and transformative experience of taking a journey.
