The Perfect Summer Watch

The new Dual Time Pink watch is resolutely fun!

Long and warm days followed by cool nights, enjoying all that the city has to offer. Miami is a tale of two cities in many ways. Fun, colourful and one of the greatest places to party on earth. And yet beneath the fun exterior, is a serious presence as a financial and cultural centre and, thanks to its geographical location, it is known as the Gateway of the Americas.

It seems fitting then that our new, limited edition One & Two Openworked Dual Time Pink is heavily inspired by the city’s Architectural District.

The new Dual Time Pink watch is resolutely fun but underpinned by haute horology. The watch has a light-hearted, summery and almost whimsical aesthetic, that much like Miami, is grounded in something entirely more serious. Beneath the playful exterior of the Openworked Dual Time Pink is the in-house calibre SMA02.

This automatic Manufacture movement was completely created and assembled in our “Le Cercle des Horlogers” workshop in la Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. This high-precision mechanism beats with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour with a power reserve of 52 hours. The SMA02 calibre also features a fully integrated micro-rotor in the shape of a Topping Tool—the House of Speake Marin’s signature. Like we said, a fun watch with a serious sideFrom its earliest point of conception, we wanted to make the ideal summer watch by embracing the emotions and energy of the Miami Beach Architectural District, also known as Old Miami Beach Historic District or the Miami Art Deco District.

Built between the Great Depression and the early 1940s, the architects of this assortment of hotels, houses and commercial buildings embraced a streamlined, colorful, optimistic style despite the economic uncertainties of that era. Its pastel-hued buildings are its signature and were the main design inspiration for our latest horological marvel. Much like these historic art deco buildings of Miami, the One & Two Collection of dual-time watches exemplifies our philosophy of respecting the past while looking toward the future. Designed by the legendary Eric Giroud, who won the Challenge Watch at the GPGH, Geneva’s Watchmaking Grand Prix, the Piccadilly case shape of the Openworked Dual Time Pink tips its hat to classical watchmaking yet the balanced, minimalist design of the openwork dial is very contemporary. For this playful edition, Giroud drew inspiration from the pastel palettes of Miami’s architecture. He chose a rose matte tint (Pantone 700 C) to elicit a new kind of carefree kind of luxury. This new generation case has been upgraded with hard-wearing, lightweight Grade 5 Titanium with a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) treatment. And to make it appealing to a wide range of wrist sizes, it’s available in both 38 mm and 42 mm. Waterproof to 30 meters it comes set on a soft, pink rubber strap making it the perfect companion for living endless summertime adventures, not just in Miami but wherever the wanderlust takes you.

What is one of main considerations when taking a watch out for the summer? Probably that it is waterproof. Whether you are sitting by the pool enjoying your favourite cocktail, snorkeling beneath the surface of your preferred beach destination or hitting the waves on your dream shore break, the Dual Time Pink can be relied on thanks to its waterproof case that hermetically seals the SMA02 movement, allowing you to keep track of time. You also don’t want to be weighed down on those warm summery days, and so we chose titanium for its light properties that won’t be a drag on your wrist!

The daring design of the Openworked Dual Time Pink is also easy to read. The matte pink elements stand out against the black PVD. The placement of the small seconds, the retrograde date sub-dial at 1:30 (we remain the only watchmaker that positions its small second at this point), the daylight hours of the dual time sub-dial at 9 o’clock, the rhodium-plated broad ‘arrow’ hand that points to GMT time, and the rhodium-plated hours and minutes hands in the shape of a heart are all accessible and easy to decipher no matter how far into the party you are. Local and GMT times are set with the three positions of the titanium/black PVD integrated crown, while a small pusher at 7 o’clock sets the small seconds and date.

Much like Miami, where light-hearted and serious collide, so too the Dual Time Pink is a watch that is young and fresh and yet rooted in the art of high-end watchmaking. It’s in many ways the perfect watch for those summer festivities. No matter where on the planet you are heading, be it Miami or the Maldives, you can always keep an eye on your home time and rest assured that your watch won’t skip a beat.
