Watches are so much more than just a way to tell time – they inspire passion, emotions and memories. They can be status-conferring or statements of style, and when we look at them, they make us think of something that makes us smile, whether it’s architecture, hobbies or loved ones.

The new Speake Marin Openworked Dual Time Terracotta is just such a watch: its theme is travel. It was inspired by the idea of traveling to the most evocative places on the planet, where the horizon is dominated by unspoiled landscapes and rare lands.

Its colors have the power to transport us to the towering rock formations of the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the arid plateaus of the Atacama Desert in Chile or the sandstone mountains of the Wadi Rum in Jordan. Or it may take us to the hilltop villages of the Luberon in France, where the rays of the setting sun turn the picturesque terracotta-paved vistas and the beaten paths through the ochre quarries of Provençal a deep red hue.

The terracotta glow is the color of summer, and it imbues the watch with an easy, chic style that works as well for beach picnics as for formal summer weddings. It’s almost easy to forget that it is otherwise a serious watch. The movement, the automatic caliber SMA02, was designed and manufactured in-house by Le Cercle des Horologers in La Chaux-de-Fonds. It is decorated to high watchmaking standards: The bridges feature 1.5 mm Geneva stripes and angles; the balance-wheel bridge is rhodium-plated and micro-blasted with polished bevelled profiles; all the steel components are polished, the gear wheels are decorated with cerclage, and the chamfered screw heads are mirror-polished. The micro-rotor’s signature topping tool is given a terracotta-orange PVD treatment.

The openworked dial reveals the main components of the movement, including the three-dimensional architecture created by its multi-layered structure, a signature effect of the Openworked model. The domed, stepped bezel, overlaps the case side slightly, which adds to the 3D aesthetic.

Like all models in the Openworked collection, the Dual Time Terracotta is available in two sizes: 38mm or 42mm. The Piccadilly case, inspired by early marine chronometers, pays homage to the brand’s British origins. The material, however, is contemporary – it’s made of grade 5 titanium, which makes it lightweight, comfortable and tough enough to travel wherever your summer takes you. The second time zone and retrograde functions will remind you where you are. Bon Voyage!
