Speake Marin introduced a new movement this year. What has been the reaction so far to the new caliber? In addition to being a design/technical achievement, has it added to the company’s success?
The launch of our new SMA07 movement, unveiled in the Ripples Skeleton, marked a major turning point for Speake Marin. The ultra-thin 3.25 mm movement, with a high frequency of 5 Hz and an integrated micro-rotor, represents a significant technical achievement for our small independent brand. Its design embodies our modern vision while respecting traditional watchmaking principles, and the enthusiasm from collectors has exceeded our expectations. The Ripples Skeleton has not only strengthened our brand image but it has boosted interest in Speake Marin on an international scale. This has helped expand our clientele and solidify our position in the independent luxury watch segment. This success is thanks to our engineers and watchmakers, whose exceptional craftsmanship made it possible. The positive reaction to the SMA07 confirms we are on the right path to reimagining watchmaking while honoring our heritage.

How will the introduction of the new caliber affect the company’s production going forward? Will the new movement be available to other collections or other brands?
Currently, we are focusing on producing the SMA07 caliber only for the Ripples Skeleton. We do not plan to introduce this exact caliber in other new products, and because we are committed to perfection, we will not compromise on the time needed to expand it. This focus does not impact the production of other models, since most were already in stock when the SMA07 was released. We have optimized our processes to meet demand while continuing production of our Piccadilly cases with collections such as Dual Time and Academic. As for the availability of the new movement to other brands, our primary goal is to preserve its exclusivity for Speake Marin initially. We want this caliber to be a hallmark of our identity and excellence.

How will Le Cercle Des Horlogers develop and evolve in the near future?
Le Cercle des Horlogers, our workshop, plays a key role in developing and producing our movements, including the new caliber. We will continue to strengthen this collaboration by expanding the workshop’s capabilities to support our constant quest for innovation. The arrival of Laurent Pin as new CEO of Le Cercle des Horlogers is a tremendous asset in the pursuit of this goal. His sharp technical expertise and innovative strategic vision bring new energy to our workshop. Under his leadership, we are optimizing production processes and exploring new creative approaches, cementing our position as a key player in high-end watchmaking.

What do you think has been the most positive change in the watch industry in the past year – or the past few years – and how does Speak Marin fit into this scenario?
In recent years, the watch industry has positively evolved by embracing more sustainable and responsible practices. At Speake Marin, we are fully aligned with this movement in several ways. First, by combining traditional craftsmanship with innovation, we create luxury watches designed to last for generations. Secondly, we collaborate with Swiss partners who share our sustainability values, prioritizing ethical supply chains for materials such as recycled gold and steel in line with RJC standards and OECD principles. We also support animal welfare, which is why we no longer offer alligator leather straps. We provide alternatives, such as straps made from recycled PET materials.

How many watches were produced in 2024? You have said the goal is not to increase production. Has that been the case this year? What is the plan going forward for production?
In 2024, we produced approximately 600 watches. By maintaining controlled production, we can balance the expectations of our partners with the demanding standards of our expertise, reaffirming our commitment to craftsmanship and exclusivity. Our plan is to continue prioritizing limited production while gradually introducing new models that highlight our technical and aesthetic advancements. Our primary vision remains to create rare and distinctive pieces that meet the high standards of our collectors and partners.

In what way have Speake Marin’s customers/collectors influenced (and continue to influence) developments in the company’s watch production and design? What is the best way for collectors to contact you directly with ideas or requests?
Watchmaking is, above all, a human story. At Speake Marin, we nurture a special relationship with our client-collectors. Their feedback is central to our choices in materials and manufacturing techniques. Even critical input is welcome. This ongoing exchange is part of what allows us to continue offering watches that resonate with them and we favor a direct and personalized dialogue. Whether at events, in boutiques, or through social media, my team and I remain attentive. These exchanges enrich our creativity and help us shape our vision of horological excellence together.
This is an exciting time for the collectors and creators of luxury watches. Together we are redefining what a luxury watch is – in terms of design, craftsmanship and technology. Our values and the values of the watch enthusiast community are aligned, and we are looking forward to another great year at Speake Marin.
